Your favourite blue videogame hedgehog (it's a niche category, admittedly) returns in the final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Set to be one of this Easter's biggest family propositions, the Sega-themed sequel pits Ben Schwartz's Sonic against the resurgent Doctor Robotnik. The latter is played, as before, by Jim Carrey, who now sports the traditional Doctor Robotnik garb and moustache. And Robotnik has support in the form of Idris Elba's no-nonsense Knuckles, a fan-favourite character making his big-screen debut.
Luckily, Sonic has support in the form of Tails (Colleen O'Shaugnessy) and his old friend Tom (James Marsden). There are plenty of sly, quick-fire references (Tom's ring tone will evoke nostalgic memories of the Sega game's starting menu), and our title character even gets to have a pop at the world of Marvel.
It certainly looks more action-packed than the first movie as director Jeff Fowler escalates Sonic's battle for the Master Emerald, the artifact that will allow Robotnik to take over the entire world. The first Sonic movie is currently the eighth-most-successful video game movie of all time, so can the sequel beat it? We'll find out when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is released in Cineworld cinemas on 1st April.
Don't forget that you can now book your Cineworld tickets for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
