Upcoming video game movie adaptations arriving in 2026

Even though video games have been around for decades and the industry has become one of the biggest entertainment sectors in the world, it’s only in the last few years that Hollywood has started to take the medium seriously with a handful of faithful adaptations released and in the works for both fans and newcomers alike.

Films like The Super Mario Bros Movie and Detective Pikachu have gone on to be big hits at the box office, whilst also serving as proof of concept for how these rich digital worlds might be translated to the big screen.

Thankfully, more production houses seem to be hopping on the trend and there are quite a few upcoming video game movie adaptations on the horizon. Keep on reading to find out what’s in store.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (out now)

The Super Mario Bros Movie was, by every measure, a delight. The film did an amazing job of bringing the iconic Mushroom Kingdom to life with eye-catching visuals and a brilliant voice cast that helped to add depth to previously voiceless characters like Mario, Luigi and Toad (outside of a few catchphrases of course).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sees Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and the gang leave behind the Mushroom Kingdom to journey through the universe in order to defeat Bowser's son, Bowser Jr. Along the way they meet Yoshi and plenty of other delightful references to Mario games past.

Mortal Kombat II (8th May, 2026)

2021’s Mortal Kombat gave fans exactly what they’d been asking for. It was an adaptation that took the core storyline of the games seriously, packed it full of incredible actors like Hiroyuki Sanada, and cranked up the violence to really deliver on what the series is known for.

The sequel is ready to kick things up a notch by introducing fan-favourite character Johnny Cage, this time played by none other than Karl Urban. The trailer hints at even more carnage than the first film, but with the humour that only Cage’s character brings to the fray.

Resident Evil (18th September, 2026)

Zach Cregger (the man behind the critically acclaimed Weapons) returns in 2026 with an adaptation of the Japanese horror video game, the second reboot and the eighth film in the film series overall. The cast includes Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson, and follows Bryan (Abrams), a medical courier who must traverse through a virus outbreak to deliver an important package to a remote hospital. On his way, he comes into contact with mutated creatures he must fight in order to survive.

A Minecraft Movie 2 (23rd July, 2027)

A Minecraft Movie – starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge – may have only come out earlier this year, but a sequel is already confirmed with a 2027 release date recently revealed (currently on the same date as The Simpsons Movie sequel). It was hugely successful, following as four people fell through a portal from the real world and into the Overworld, where they had to turn their hands to wielding the turrain in order to try and get home.

The Simpsons Movie 2 (23rd July, 2027)

Okay, listen, we know The Simpsons was a TV show first, but there have been a bunch of (incredible) The Simpsons video games, that we feel like the fact we're finally getting a second Simpsons movie is worthy of its place on this upcoming video game adaptations list. Not to mention the fact it's currently scheduled to come out the same day as A Minecraft Movie 2 – we're currently thinking Simpcraft or Minesons for opening weekend... With 27 video games released across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Sega, and others, the likes of Hit & Run and Nintendo's The Simpsons Game have a special place in our heart. There were so many iconic scenes in the first The Simpsons Movie, that we cannot wait for more.

The Legend of Zelda (2027)

At the time of writing, not a lot is known about Nintendo’s long-awaited film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda series. The only things we know for sure is that it’s going to be a live-action flick and that Link and Zelda will be played by newcomers Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason respectively.

Given that there are so many games within the series, it’s hard to know for sure which of them will serve as the main source material for the film, but our money is on either Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time as they stand out for having the biggest impact in the minds of fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2027)

Given that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has become one of the most profitable game adaptations of all time, it should be of no surprise to anyone that there’s a fourth film currently in the works.

Much like The Legend of Zelda, little is known about the film just yet (we don’t even know if Jim Carrey will be returning as Dr Robotnik), but with Amy Rose and Metal Sonic making a last minute appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it’s safe to say that both of those characters will take up more screentime for this follow-up.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 (January 29th 2027)

Very few games are as world-renowned in the modern era than Angry Birds, and even though we’d be hard stretched to get three films worth of material out of a game that’s all about flinging birds from one end of the screen to the other, the two adaptations we’ve had so far have been great fun for the whole family.

At this point, next to nothing is known about the direction this film might take but we’ve been surprised if the core cast (Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride) didn’t reappear for this installment.

Beyond those initial six, here are the other video game adaptations we know about:

Other films in production:
- Death Stranding (TBC)
- Street Fighter (2026)
- Stray (TBC)
- Ghost of Tsushima (TBC)
