Disney has surprised us all with the announcement of the Moana sequel – and we're getting it at the end of this year. To celebrate the news, here's the first image from the movie – all together now, you're welcome!
How far will the plucky, Polynesian, not-quite-princess Moana go in the sequel? The above image suggests it'll be pretty far across the ocean and beyond. The screenshot reveals the titular Moana (voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho) and her loyal demigod sidekick Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson). Although neither actor has been officially confirmed for the sequel, it wouldn't be Moana without them, surely?
Additional plot details are even more mysterious than the fabled Heart of Te Fiti. That said, a one-sentence synopsis has been revealed: 'After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.'
The first Moana movie, released in 2016, was a blockbuster hit and made great strides for indigenous representation within Disney animated movies. Moana received two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("How Far I'll Go") and cemented the characters of both Moana and Maui as new Disney favourites.
Dave Derrick Jr. is directing while Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina return to compose the score. They're joined this time by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (who replace the original film's Lin-Manuel Miranda).
Enough Moana news? Not quite – let's not forget that the live-action Moana remake is also in the offing and that one definitely has Johnson on board. The remake is due for release at an undisclosed date. Moana 2 sets sail for the high seas on November 27th – yes, we don't have too long to wait.
