Onward (on release now)

Disney-Pixar's latest movie is the inspiring and emotional story of a bond forged between two siblings, as they seek to bring their late father to life. Marvel brethren Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are the bantering brothers who embark on a magical quest – yes, it's Star Lord and Spider-Man in the same movie. And, as those fans of Inside Out, Coco and Toy Story 4 will know, you ought to brace your tear ducts as well...

My Spy (on release now)

Dave Bautista first demonstrated his comic chops in Guardians of the Galaxy, and he brings the laughs all over again in this knockabout spy caper. He plays JJ, a veteran espionage agent who is reluctantly forced to pair up with the young girl who blows his cover. Imagine Drax the Destroyer with a smidgen more self-awareness, and you can get the measure of Bautista's deadpan performance in this chalk and cheese comedy.

Sonic the Hedgehog (on release now)

Under the impression that all video game movies are inherently bad? Well, the new Sonic movie has run rings around the competition, cleaning up at the box office to the tune of $306 million. It's the Sega favourite's big-screen debut, and while comedian Ben Schwartz voices our title character, the reliably rubber-faced Jim Carrey is Sonic's fiendish nemesis, Dr. Robotnik.
