Kathryn Hahn knows best as she reveals Mother Gothel casting for Tangled Disney live action film

Mother Knows Best, so listen to Kathryn Hahn, because she has officially revealed that she will play Mother Gothel in the forthcoming live action of Disney’s beloved 2010 animation Tangled.

Posting on her Instagram account – with the apt username ‘@motherhahn’, Kathryn Hahn shared her ‘OOTD’, including a Mother Gothel T-shirt as a way of announcement.

This follows news Hahn was in talks for the role, with the project initially revived when Scarlett Johansson had shown interest in playing the part of the classic Disney villain. Between Batman II and The Exorcist commitments, though, she had to back out, and the casting of Kathryn Hahn certainly feels meant to be.

Alongside the classic evil step mother trope, Disney’s own spunky version of the Rapunzel fairytale includes beloved characters Flynn Rhyder (arguably the most attractive animated male character – no, that’s not weird to say), his begrudging noble steed Maximus, and Rapunzel's confidant, a chameleon called Pascal.

The film is in early development, but here’s everything we know about the Disney live action Tangled, including the cast announced so far for this upcoming Disney movie.

Who has been cast in the Tangled Disney live action so far?

Alongside Kathryn Hahn’s recently announced casting as Mother Gothel, Tangled’s villainous stepmother who wishes to harvest the power of Rapunzel’s hair and bask in eternal youth, there is, of course, the main gal herself.

Rapunzel will be played by Teagan Croft while Flynn Ryder will be played by Milo Manheim, both relatively fresh faces in the world of Hollywood.

Who will direct the Disney live action of Tangled?

Michael Gracey is signed on to direct the Tangled Disney live action. No stranger to big productions, he’s the man behind The Greatest Showman and the Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (who auditioned for the role of Miley Cyrus’ best friend in Hannah Montana when she was 16) is set to write the script.

Is the Tangled Disney live action definitely happening?

Going by the news Kathryn Hahn has been cast as Mother Gothel, it looks like the Tangled live action is finally happening. But we definitely get it being apprehensive. We’ve been burned before, afterall. While development of a live action Rapunzel movie started in December 2024, it was indefinitely put on hold after the performance of some of Disney’s other live action remakes.

Between last year’s Lilo & Stitch becoming a part of everyone’s ohana and Scarlett Johansson’s interest in the role of Mother Gothel, it reentered development a year later in December 2025.

Since then, the cast announcements have been coming thick and fast. And considering Scarlett Johansson had to withdraw interest due to filming conflicts, it makes sense production is likely to begin this year, with The Exorcist having just started filming as of 2nd March, and the sequel to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman (2022) due to start filming in “early spring 2026”.

Reportedly, Tangled is set to begin filming in June of this year across England and Burgos, Castile and León, Spain.
