How awesome is the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse? The movie is the sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which joyously imploded our expectations of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's identity, to Oscar-winning effect.
The animation and level of ambition look even more eye-popping in the sequel, which is once again overseen by LEGO Movie creatives Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The directors this time are Joaquim dos Santos and Kemp Powers who send multiversal Spider-Man Miles Morales on another journey of dazzling discovery and excitement. (Don't forget that it will be followed by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, due for release in 2024.)
When we say that the Across the Spider-Verse trailer is positively stuffed with classic Spidey cameos, we really mean it. Scroll down to discover all of the Easter Eggs that we spotted.
1. Miles Morales/Spider-Man
Let's start with the obvious. Following his first excursion into the multiverse, Miles Morales/Spider-Man (voiced by Shameik Moore) has been restored to his natural universe. In the trailer, we see Miles being consoled by his mother who advises our hero not to lose sight of himself in the midst of the great responsibility he now wields.
Having now adopted the mantle of Spider-Man in his own realm, Miles will no doubt have to juggle his heroic duties with that of an everyday Brooklyn teenager. That is, until his friend (and love interest?) Gwen Stacey (more on whom below) turns up from her own dimension. She takes Miles back into the multiverse where she exposes him to an extraordinary realm of untapped potential.
2. Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen
Voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen first made her mark in Into the Spider-Verse. In Across the Spider-Verse, she once again takes the lead in many respects, acting as the kick-ass conduit between Miles and the boundless possibilities of the multiverse.
3. Peter Parker/Spider-Man
The aging Peter Parker/Spider-Man is once more voiced by Jake Johnson. In the first movie, he acted as a mentor to Miles Morales. Will the pupil exceed the master in Across the Spider-Verse?
4. Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099
Across the Spider-Verse boasts an array of striking new faces. Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 is just one of them. Judging from the trailer, he's pining for his family and this manifests in the form of clawed rage as he appears to come gunning for Miles Morales. Maybe in Spider-Man 2099's universe, Miles was directly or indirectly responsible for some sort of tragedy?
Spider-Man 2099 made his comic book debut in 1992. Otherwise known as Miguel O'Hara, he's a geneticist who attempts to replicate the original Spider-Man's DNA in other people, with disastrous results. This leads to him being invested, or cursed, with paralysing fangs, superstrength, enhanced vision and a lot more besides.
5. Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman
The pivotal role of Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman is voiced by the multi-talented actor/comedian/producer/director Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl; Insecure). As per her comic background, Jessica grew up in the fictional European country of Transia where her parents deployed uranium mined from Wundagore Mountain for their various scientific experiments.
When Jessica is poisoned by the subsequent radiation, her parents are compelled to inject her with a serum made from arachnid blood. At one point, Jessica became a Hydra agent, before eventually taking on the mantle of Spider-Woman. Whether any of this will make it into Across the Spider-Verse remains to be seen.
6. Insomniac's Spider-Man and Spider-Armour Mk II (seen 1:25 into the trailer)
Game developers Insomniac were lauded for their PlayStation 4 adventure Marvel's Spider-Man, released in 2018. It's considered by many to be the definitive videogame iteration of the wall-crawler and we think we've spotted Insomniac's twist on the character as he strolls amidst the host of other Spider-People. Peter’s Advanced Suit is easily identified by the white lines over the classic red and blue costume.
The black and yellow Spider-Armor MK II was introduced in 2011’s Amazing Spider-Man #656. Peter Parker created the Spider-Armor MK II to compensate for the loss of his Spider-Sense. The suit is bulletproof, helping Peter to fight criminals even if he can no longer anticipate gunshots.
7. Spinnernet and Spiderling, and Spider-Cop (seen 1:27 into the trailer)
Mary Jane Watson/Spinneret and Annie Parker/Spiderling are the wife and daughter of Peter Parker from Earth-18119. The superpowered version of Mary Jane first appeared in 2015’s Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows Vol. 1 #1.
Spider-Cop is a New York police officer who hails from Earth-19119.
8. Bombastic Bag Man and Werewolf Spider-Man (seen 1:28 and 2:04 into the trailer)
Fan-favourite Bag Man hails from 1984’s Amazing Spider-Man #258. In the comic books, Peter gets rid of his 'symbiont' suit and needs to find some clothes. The Fantastic Four’s Human Torch lends him a uniform, and Peter hides his face with a paper bag.
Werewolf Spider-Man (aka Peter Parker from Earth-7085 within the multiverse) was introduced in 2007’s Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness #5. This version of Peter Parker became a monster who hankered for the taste of human flesh.
