Renée Zellweger’s 10 best Bridget Jones moments from the hilarious to the heartbreaking

The fourth movie in the hit Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, is this year's big Valentine's Day release. We're inviting you to check your diary and clear your calendar in preparation for a Cineworld visit as you once again spend two hours in the company of Renée Zellweger's lovelorn Bridget.

She now finds herself widowed with two kids, one of whom she had with ex-beau Mark Darcy, and is ready to face the dating minefield all over again. The comic ups and downs of this blockbuster series wouldn't work without Zellweger's immaculate comic timing and pathos, so we've rounded up several of her best moments to get you primed for the new movie.

1. 'All By Myself'

Bored and drunk and on your own? Whack on the stereo and sing (badly) along to Celine Dion's All By Myself! It’s what nights in are all about.

2. Big pants

Oh, the embarrassment… Bridget and her sleazy boss-turned-lover Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) get a bit heated on her living room floor, only for the moment to be ruined when he discovers she’s wearing "absolutely enormous pants".

3. The Tarts and Vicars party

Imagine, you think you’re going to a “vicars and tarts” party, but instead walk in on… not a ‘vicars and tarts’ party. Oops.

4. Daniel does the dirty

One could practically hear hearts breaking worldwide when Bridget walks in on Daniel and the "American stick insect" he's been having an affair with. Seeing a disconsolate Bridget wandering around London wearing her bunny ears is hilarious and utterly heartbreaking in equal measure.

5. Standing up to Daniel

Revenge is a dish best served cold, albeit amid the office you're about to quit and with a NSFW reference to Saddam Hussein. The empowering strains of Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' perfectly complete the picture.

6. In pursuit of Mark Darcy

Imagine that your cathartic tell-all diary fell into the hands of the man who was Mr. Right all along. Just went Bridget and the seemingly aloof Mark (Colin Firth) start to click, he appears to angrily storm out into the snowy London weather. Of course, he's really only looking to buy her a new diary – cue the perfect fairy tale ending for our Bridget.

7. Taking the piste

Sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason fails to live up to its predecessor but it's not without its funny moments. Case in point: this moment where Bridget goes skiing – disastrously.

8. Jail sing-along

In a scene that continues to divide opinion, an incarcerated Bridget leads a Thai jail collective in a rendition of Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'. The scene is very broad but Zellweger's likable screen persona just about pulls us through.

9. Reconciling with Mark

The Edge of Reason centres around Bridget's on-again/off-again relationship with the man of her dreams, Mark. Following competition from the invasive Daniel Cleaver, it looks like everything's about to fall apart once more, but it reconciles with a sweet-natured finale.

10. Bridget has her baby

Who is the father of Bridget's child: Mark Darcy or hunky American Jack (Patrick Dempsey)? It certainly isn't Daniel Cleaver as he's assumed (incorrectly) to have died in a plane crash. The end of Bridget Jones's Baby sees a new chapter open up in the title character's life as Mark is confirmed as the father.
