The Spider-Man movie franchise has been steadily expanding over the last few years. In 2018, we had the Oscar-winning animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And originally scheduled for this year, but now pushed back to 2021: Tom Hardy sequel Venom 2, and Jared Leto movie Morbius.
It seems the Spidey universe is catching more movies and properties in its web. And news has come in from Variety that Game of Thrones director S.J. Clarkson is attached to a new movie in the franchise. Clarkson has also helmed episodes of Jessica Jones and Heroes, so she's got past form as far as superheroes are concerned.
Although distributor Sony has yet to comment, Variety states, that "there is a possibility that the studio is looking for an A-list actor to join and then hire a writer to develop the film around them". They also imply that the property will centre on Madame Web, a clairvoyant character connected to the Spider-Woman lineage.
There have been increased calls for the Spidey series to be less of a boys'-own adventure, and this could be the first step. Created by writer Denny O'Neil and artist John Romita Jr, Madame Web first appeared in 1980, an old woman connected to a support system that resembled a spider web.
The character is the grandmother of Charlotte Witter, the fourth Spider-Woman character to appear in the comics. This could be another opportunity to branch out and include the origin stories of female characters tangentially connected to Peter Parker.
Failing that, perhaps one of the characters introduced in Spider-Verse ought to get their shot? It's doubtful whether Spider-Ham/Peter Porker could sustain his own movie, but Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man Noir (who can only see things in black and white) might translate well.
