Everything we know about rumoured Furiosa follow-up movie The Wasteland

As Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga continues to tear its way across Cineworld screens, we've got pressing questions about the future of the Mad Max saga. Furiosa acts as the prequel to 2015's acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, which itself followed in the post-apocalyptic tire-treads of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Mad Max: The Road Warrior (1981) and Mad Max (1979).

What has famously inventive director George Miller got up his sleeve in his proposed new movie, The Wasteland? He's describing it as a "saga" so scroll down to find out more.

Has The Wasteland been officially confirmed?

In a word, no, not officially.

“I’m still figuring out what to do with [‘The Wasteland’],” Miller said. “I’m just waiting to see the reception on Furiosa. If it all lines up, then we’ll go ahead with it.”

When will The Wasteland take place?

Speaking on the Happy .Sad .Confused podcast, Miller confirmed that the proposed film will take place a year before Fury Road and follows Max as he's joined by a young mother.

What else has George Miller said about The Wasteland?

“I’d say that it certainly has a lot of action in it, but it is also a saga,” Miller explained. “It’s a year-long story. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights. You could almost say that the first act, some part of the second act, and the third act mostly play in real time. Quite a different kettle of fish than Furiosa.”

Will Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron appear in The Wasteland?

Again, this is unknown at the moment. Famously, Hardy and Theron didn't get on during the making of Mad Max: Fury Road, although they later made amends and it's unlikely that on-set spats from 2012 would permanently derail them working together again.

A more interesting question relates to the timeline: if The Wasteland takes place just a year before Fury Road, then surely Anya Taylor-Joy's iteration of Furiosa would have evolved into Charlize Theron. That's assuming Furiosa appears in The Wasteland, of course.

Likewise, it would make narrative and aesthetic sense to have Tom Hardy's Max appear in the film, given its alleged proximity to the events of Fury Road.
