Denzel Washington is preparing to make The Equalizer 3

First, there was The Equalizer. Then there was The Equalizer 2 aka The Sequelizer. And now, Denzel Washington is on board to make The Equalizer 3, which surely makes it The Threequalizer?

In an interview with Collider, Washington, whose new film A Journal for Jordan is on release this week, confirmed that a third Equalizer movie has been written. Washington elaborated: "They have written the third Equalizer, so I’m scheduled to do that. So I gotta get in shape and start beating people up again. I get to beat people up again. The Tragedy Of Macbeth and then going and beating some people up. Can’t get any better, right?”

The first two Equalizer movies are very loosely inspired by the 1980s Edward Woodward TV series of the same name. Washington stars as Robert McCall, an apparently benign, bookish ex-CIA agent who possesses a particular set of skills. These skills usually involve killing reprehensible baddies in the bloodiest kind of way, be they Russian mobsters or, in the case of the sequel, former colleagues gone rogue.

The first two films were box office hits, capitalising on Washington's inherent charisma and the brutal efficiency of director Antoine Fuqua who had directed the actor to Oscar-winning success in Training Day. Fuqua is said to be returning for the third Equalizer movie and back in 2018, he expressed ideas about what it could involve.

"In my mind, there’s a European adventure, absolutely," he explained. "In my mind, that’s what I’d like, to see him in Europe, in the future. God willing."

We'll keep our eye out for more news. In the meantime, Washington directs A Journal for Jordan, which recounts the romantic yet tragic true story of soldier Charles Monroe King and journalist Dane Canedy. The movie, starring Michael B. Jordan, is released in Cineworld cinemas on 21st January (check out the Unlimited screening reactions here).
