Danielle Brooks reveals all about her incredible improvised moment in The Color Purple

The talented cast of The Color Purple assembled for our behind-the-scenes interview. Celie actor Fantasia Barrino joined Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks, who portrays Sofia, and Corey Hawkins, who plays Harpo, to discuss their all-singing, all-dancing roles in the new Alice Walker adaptation.

The Color Purple is adapted from the Broadway musical iteration of Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The movie charts the trials and tribulations of the young African-American woman Celie after she is abused by her father, forced into marriage with the cruel Mister (Colman Domingo) and separated from her beloved sister Nettie at a young age.

Providing a counterbalance to the gloom is Brooks' performance as the larger-than-life Sofia whose go-getting spirit provides much of the movie's warmth. The role was originally played by Oprah Winfrey in Steven Spielberg's 1985 adaptation of the novel (both Winfrey and Spielberg have produced this version, along with the earlier movie's composer Quincy Jones).

Watch the interview to discover how Brooks' single moment of inspiration elevated one of the story's most powerful scenes.
