Christopher Nolan's 13th film sees him journey back further in time than his storytelling has ever taken us before – and we've just got ourselves our first full length trailer!
It's a story of epic proportions. A book to screen adaptation of the ancient Greek text by Homer, the film was shot entirely on IMAX's 70mm film, reportedly using more than two million feet of film.
Marking Odysseus' perilous journey home after winning the Trojan War, he and his army of men encouter many fantastical and dangerous creatures along the way, as well as the trecherous elements of the world and its seas. Watch the trailer below and read on for our key takeaways from the trailer.
Matt Damon is, once again, just trying to get home
We’re not saying Matt Damon is being pigeon-holed, but the guy does find himself trying to get home an awful lot in many of his movies.
From The Martian to another Nolan title, Interstellar, and Dogma, the guy just wants to get home safe and sound. And it’s once again the case in The Odyssey, in which he plays Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, who embarks on a treacherous journey home following the Trojan War.
Even with all Matt Damon’s constant setbacks on film, though, as Odysseus he is determine. “No one could stand between me and home. Not even the gods.”

The Trojan War from Iliad will feature in The Odyssey
While the events of the Trojan War (the one where they all hid in a big wooden horse) takes place in Homer’s prequel, The Iliad, the trailer promises we’ll at least get some flashbacks to the epic war, with bodies dropping from the giant horse structure.

Odysseus takes on the Laestrygonians
The trailer featured a deadly run in with the Laestrygonians, giving an insight into the epic, fantastical proportions of The Odyssey and its storytelling. With one solider flinged with such force that his body literally chops a tree in half… Well, clearly they’re creatures not to be messed with.

Robert Pattinson is the villain of this story, and he’s taunting poor Tom Holland
Pattinson is vying for another wedding in The Odyssey, following his dark romantic comedy The Drama with Zendaya earlier this year. Portraying Antinuous, he’s just one of a crowd of suitors lining up to marry Penelope and take Odysseus’ place – and Pattinson is the perfect, smarmy villain.

We get so many delicious moments, particularly where he taunts Tom Holland – who plays Odysseus son Telemachus. One particular line that is sending the internet feral is: “You’re pining for a daddy you didn’t even know” not least because it feels bizarre (but also kind of chic) to hear “daddy” and “dad” used rather than “father” in a classic such as this.
Everyone has American accents
There are a few Brits in the cast, including Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, and Himesh Patel. However, they’re all speaking in American accents. This is certainly a choice given most ancient epics tend to adopt a British accent regardless of the origin of the text.
Can anyone else smell another Oscar nom for Anne Hathaway?
Anne Hathaway has been booked and busy in 2026. She’s played a pop star, she’s returned to her role as the budding journalist Andy Sachs, and there’s plenty more on her roster this year with the Colleen Hoover book to film adaptation Verity as well as scifi survival film The End of Oak Street alongside Ewan McGregor. But perhaps most exciting of all is her role in The Odyssey, in which she plays Odysseus’ wife Penelope, who has to fend off suitors in the absence of her husbands arduous journey home.

Anne Hathaway gives serious face anyway, but this feels like perhaps her most demanding role in her 2026 line-up, and it feels like it has Best Supporting Actress winner written all over it. Hathaway previously won the award for Les Misérables in 2012. Time for another?
The Odyssey will land at Cineworld from the 17th July.
