Oscar-winner Mark Rylance has delighted Cineworld Unlimited members with his performance in The Phantom of the Open. The uplifting movie screened in advance for the Unlimited crowd, allowing them a sneak peek at an unlikely yet delightful true story of a plucky British underdog.
Rylance portrays humble dockyard worker Maurice Flitcroft who, becalmed and directionless at middle age, takes a swing on entering the 1976 British Open Golf championships. To his amazement, he gets in – and promptly upsets the snooty golfing establishment with his evident lack of skill.
Despite being dubbed "the world's worst golfer", Maurice's working-class charm and grace win him an unlikely army of fans while also serving to inspire his loyal wife Jean (Sally Hawkins). The film is directed by Submarine star Craig Roberts and adapted by Paddington writer Simon Farnaby from his own book, The Phantom of the Open.
So, what did the Unlimited audience make of the movie? We've curated a few of their responses.
I can honestly say, without any hyperbole at all, that Phantom Of The Open is the most enjoyable time I've had at the cinema this year.

It was Absolutely Brilliant! It definitely had the Eddie the Eagle and Catch Me If You Can atmosphere to the story. Everyone including myself was rooting for Maurice throughout the movie! I would happily watch it again. Overall I give the film a 9.5/10! Grade: A+! 😁😁😁

Loved it! It was funny, heartfelt and very charming. Hadn’t heard of Maurice Flitcroft before this, but his life is definitely something I think everyone should know about! Would highly recommend people go and see the film.

I saw it with my family and it appeals to all ages. We were laughing all the time and it has a real feel good factor. Mark Rylance & Sally Hawkins were so believable in these roles with the rest of the cast. Loved the soundtrack too! 🎬 #PhantomoftheOpen

Truly lovely British film. Heartwarming and amazingly (looking it up on wiki) not even made up! Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins wonderful as always. Loved the soundtrack by Isobel Waller-Bridge too.

The world needs some innocence and joy right now. This film has both in abundance. Could hear so much laughter throughout and I laughed multiple times. A beautiful film. What a pleasure to watch.
