The upcoming Babylon courses along with a streak of devilish madness. It showcases a wilder and more excessive side to director Damien Chazelle who scored an Oscar for the more audience-friendly La La Land.
If the latter movie spun a gloriously bittersweet romance from modern-day Hollywood, then Babylon throws in at the deep end during the film industry's toxic birth. We witness a group of characters, variously successful, ambitious and troubled, as they navigate the onslaught of coke-fuelled, alcohol-driven parties of the so-called 'Roaring Twenties'.
Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie are just two of the big names in the cast, and the movie Is further propelled by a crackerjack score from Chazelle's regular collaborator Justin Hurwitz. The latter is the composer who landed an Oscar for La La Land and a Golden Globe for Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic, First Man.
Hurwitz's contribution to Babylon embodies the spirit of the movie: a roaring, thunderously jazzy salute to the worst aspects of human depravity and excess. In fact, a lot of the music we see being performed in the context of the movie (actor Jovan Adepo plays a jazz trumpeter) originated from Hurwitz's pen.
The Babylon soundtrack is already being cited as a potential Oscar contender, so go behind the scenes and see how he struck all the high notes.
