In 2019, Disney's live-action Aladdin movie unlocked a treasure trove of wonders, grossing more than $800 million worldwide to become one of their most profitable remakes. Through a combination of nostalgia for the 1992 animated classic, and the presence of Will Smith as the Genie, the film, directed by Guy Ritchie, captivated audiences around the world. So it's little wonder that Disney are planning a sequel.
Hollywood trade paper Variety confirms that "Disney is developing a follow-up to [Aladdin] with writers John Gatins and Andrea Berloff". Gatins is responsible for 2011 Hugh Jackman vehicle Real Steel, in which robots duke it out in wrestling rings; Berloff received an Oscar nomination for her script for NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. So, can we expect a blend of popcorn thrills and urban grittiness in the next Aladdin movie? Well, probably more of the former than the latter.
It's unclear at this stage if Ritchie or Smith will return, or indeed stars Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, who played Aladdin and Princess Jasmine. A whole new world? We'll find out before long. In the meantime, tweet us your responses to the news @Cineworld.
