The infected will go on the rampage again in the newly-announced 28 Years Later. This will act as the sequel to the trendsetting 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, and its follow-up, 28 Weeks Later.
Both Boyle and Garland are creatively involved in 28 Years Later, which is being set up as the first in a new trilogy of movies, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Boyle went on to enjoy Oscar-winning success with Slumdog Millionaire whereas Garland stepped up to direct Ex-Machina, Annihilation and Men.
Released in 2002, 28 Days Later popularised the notion of fast zombies (even though they were technically infected humans, as opposed to the undead), and made a star out of Cillian Murphy, who's recently enjoyed Golden Globe-winning success with Oppenheimer.
28 Days Later's memorably eerie opening sequence involves Murphy's Jim wandering around a deserted London, before stumbling upon the viral madness that has caused humanity to go into meltdown.
Sequel 28 Weeks Later, which Boyle and Garland executive produced, doubled down on the action and the horror as the Rage virus returns to decimate a quarantined London that is in the throes of recovery. That movie ended with the newly evolved virus escaping from the UK mainland, culminating in the shot of Rage-infected people storming toward the Eiffel Tower.
The Hollywood Reporter states that "[Boyle and Garland] will also produce, as would original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, the former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the division of onetime studio Twentieth Century Fox that originally backed the British-made movie and its sequel."
More news as we get it. In the meantime, Alex Garland returns this spring with his post-apocalyptic thriller Civil War, starring Kirsten Dunst. It's released on April 26th and you can watch the trailer below.
