Tom Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie are the new Hollywood dream team. They've collaborated on two Mission: Impossible movies so far, with the next instalments on the way in 2023 and 2024, plus the first Jack Reacher movie and Top Gun: Maverick (for which McQuarrie co-wrote the screenplay).
That's more than enough to take the breath away – heck, the combined box office of their existing Mission: Impossible movies exceeds $1.5 billion, and Top Gun: Maverick has now soared to $1.3 billion worldwide.
Cruise's penchant for performing his own stunts in-camera is evidently well-matched by McQuarrie's desire to push the technical limits. Given that the next Mission movie's trailer, Dead Reckoning - Part 1, culminates with Cruise throwing himself off a cliff on a bike, we wonder where they can go from here.
The answer is: many different areas. Cruise and McQuarrie have reportedly got three wildly diverse ideas on the cards once the eighth Mission movie, reputed to be the last, completes production. First up, another action epic that is set to test the boundaries even further.
"It’s kind of under wraps," McQuarrie told the Light the Fuse podcast. "It has neither a fuse nor a fuselage. Oh that’s not true… It does have some fuselages. It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do.
"It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse. And yet it takes everything we’ve learned on this journey, which is making movies more and more about emotion and real emotional experiences.
"That’s what you’re feeling when you’re watching Top Gun – it’s me and Tom squeezing your adrenals for every emotion. Now we’re applying that to something that is gnarlier."
Brace yourselves, because Deadline reports that the two men are also looking to collaborate on a new movie musical. And just when it couldn't get any more eclectic, there's also a desire to resurrect Cruise's hilarious Tropic Thunder scene-stealer Les Grossman for his own movie.
More fat hands and dancing to Flo Rida? We're down for that. (Warning: there's choice language in the following clip.)
In the meantime, we can await the release of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One on 14th July 2023. Dead Reckoning Part Two will hit us on 28th June 2024.
