Writer/director Florian Zeller's The Father won Anthony Hopkins his second Oscar. Zeller's sensitive adaptation of his own stage play wrought a devastating and incisive look at the corrosive effects of Alzheimer's Disease, sporting a towering performance from Hopkins as the titular parent.
We're now about to be graced with the movie adaptation of Zeller's second play, The Son. (One imagines that Zeller's third play, The Mother, is due for its own movie adaptation.) Hugh Jackman leads a strong cast as the divorced parent forced to juggle the needs of his new family with those of his estranged child, played by rising star Zen McGrath.
Jackman's character Peter has long been separated from his ex-wife Kate (Oscar winner Laura Dern), and has since settled down with Emma (The Crown's Vanessa Kirby) and their new baby. However, when Kate deposits Peter's now-teenage son Nicholas (McGrath), it sets in motion a host of complex recriminations.
Sporting an appearance from Hopkins' character from The Father, this could rise to the top of the 2022 Oscar race. This is especially true given The Son's prominence at the 2022 Venice Film Festival where it's in competition for the top prize, the Golden Lion.
Check out the first trailer below. The Son is yet to confirm its UK release date – more news on that when we get it.
