Fans of the Resident Evil franchise were beside themselves with excitement when it was announced back in 2017 that a brand-new film was being made. It's taken four whole years to see the initial fruits of that project, but they're finally here in the shape of the very first trailer.
Written and directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is a survival horror film adapted from the stories of the first and second titles in Capcom's classic game series. The plot centres around the titular city in the US Midwest – once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant the Umbrella Corporation, now a virtual ghost town. As evil begins to bubble beneath the surface, a group of young people (led by Kaya Scodelario and Robbie Amell) set out to uncover the truth behind this sinister organisation, while trying to survive the onslaught...
Of course, this isn't the first time that the Resident Evil game has been translated to the big screen. Capcom's franchise first hit cinemas in 2002 with the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed Resident Evil. And that was followed by a further five films over the next 14 years.
Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is not a follow-up to those movies, but rather an origin story. In 2019, shortly after development started, the Level Unlocked Podcast wrote that the reboot would be "super, super scary". And judging by the trailer, it looks like they were right. The film is due to arrive at Cineworld cinemas on 3rd December, so keep an eye out for when tickets go on sale.
