Marvel enthusiasts across the UK are sure to be spinning with excitement as the new superhero flick Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse prepares to swing into Cineworld cinemas (from June 1). Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, this computer-animated sequel comes fully five years after its predecessor – the rather similar-sounding Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – giving fans of the iconic character plenty of time to get themselves worked up.
But why should you come and see this action blockbuster? Here, we bring you five compelling reasons to book your tickets now...
1. It's the last Marvel film until November
Marvel fans have been spoilt recently, what with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (still showing at Cineworld) and now Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse all hitting cinemas. But after this new Spidey film, there isn't another Marvel movie coming until Nia DaCosta's The Marvels on November 10. 2. The film is set across five different universes
Doing the math, five universes should mean five times the amount of action, right? Well, not necessarily, but having so many different worlds and characters thrown into one melting pot of mayhem does make Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse incredibly compelling. The five universes in question are Earth-65, Nueva York, Mumbattan, New London and a fifth one whose name and details are currently being kept a secret. "Each world is a robust place,” Joaquim Dos Santos told Empire. “We’ve essentially made five films in one.”
3. There's a new villain
We love a good baddie here at Cineworld, and there's a rather creepy one to look forward to in this new Spider-Man film. Named The Spot, he has a ghostly white body covered in inter-dimensional portals that can transport him to where he wants to go in an instant. Miles Morales' "most formidable foe yet" is voiced by Jason Schwartzman, whose previous films include Saving Mr Banks, Wine Country and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. We can't wait to meet him.
4. It features loads of art styles
We're always in awe of the artwork featured in animated movies such as this – and by the sound of it, the new Spider-Man film is going to be particularly eye-popping. Producer Phil Lord told Empire: "The first film had one animation style that dominates the movie. This movie has six. So we're taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on [one of the production team's previous movies] The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. Which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflects the story, and that the images are driven by feelings as opposed to some egg-headed art project. Which it also is, by the way!"
5. The first film won multiple awards
If its predecessor is anything to go by, then this movie should be an absolute corker. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse not only won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature – the first non-Disney or Pixar film to do so since Rango in 2011 – it also picked up a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award. With the latest Spidey outing reportedly costing even more to make than that movie, there's every chance it could clean up at next year's gong shows.
