Parasite director Bong Joon-ho wants to make a musical

Back in February, writer-director Bong Joon-ho stormed the Oscars with his monumentally brilliant film Parasite. The South Korean satire won historic firsts in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature categories, a clean sweep that was highly deserved.

For Bong's fans the world over, it was justification following years of acclaimed, genre-defying movies. From the dystopian sci-fi of Snowpiercer to the socially conscious monster movie chaos of The Host, Bong has always excelled at keeping audiences on their toes, changing tone with quicksilver speed from one scene to the next.

And Bong isn't resting on his laurels. In an interview with Empire Magazine, he says he now wants to tackle a musical, his first in fact – but don't go expecting something like La La Land or The Greatest Showman. After all, this is the man who expertly pulled the rug out from us with that chilling subterranean reveal midway through Parasite.

Bong says he "would love to make a movie musical," adding: "Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, f**k this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ In The Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be different."

Now, that is something we would like to see. Bong has triumphed in every previous genre he's tackled, and the prospect of an anti-musical is ripe with the potential for big laughs, big gasps and surreal, even horrifying, dance numbers.
