Fans of audacious filmmaking and bold, brave performances are encouraged to seek out the Cineworld Unlimited screening of Nitram. The movie previews on 27 June and offers another showcase for director Justin Kurzel's moody, engrossing style.
Kurzel, acclaimed for helming the Michael Fassbender-starring Macbeth and True History of the Kelly Gang, returns to his home country of Australia. He dramatises one of the most shocking incidents in Australian history, crafting a complex tale of sympathy and revulsion.
Indie stalwart Caleb Landry Jones (Get Out; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) stars as emotionally isolated loner Nitram. Having made an unlikely bond with wealthy neighbour Helen (The Bababook's Essie Davis), Nitram appears to be on the path to redemption.
However, a tragic and unexpected set of circumstances causes the fragile youngster to head into freefall. Barton Fink's Judy Davis and Lantana's Anthony LaPaglia round out the excellent cast of this compelling drama.
Nitram has been acclaimed by critics since its premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The Guardian critic Luke Buckmaster describes the film as "another extraordinary achievement from Kurzel, who has a penchant for evoking gut-sinking emotional atmosphere."
