We sat down with Christopher Nolan, one of the greatest filmmakers of our age, to discuss his searing new epic Oppenheimer. The movie is named after J. Robert Oppenheimer, the pioneering physicist behind the atomic bomb who was distinguished and ultimately doomed by his destructive creation.
A career-best Cillian Murphy burns up the screen as the piercing yet conflicted Oppenheimer, and he's backed by the strongest ensemble cast seen in years. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, Benny Safdie and more all put a human face on a story of good intentions that eventually become weaponised.
Of course, the real star of the show is Nolan himself. Via the cutting-edge nature of IMAX cameras, he captures vistas both awe-inspiring and apocalyptic, alternating between colour and, in a first for the medium, analog black and white. The movie further develops Nolan's affinity with the IMAX format as it lends greater resolution and exposure to an epochal moment in human history when Oppenheimer's atomic Trinity Test presaged a chilling new era for mankind.
Watch the following interview in which Nolan explains why the IMAX format is set to bring greater clarity to Oppenheimer's fascinating life story.
