One of the year's most celebrated and acclaimed films, Past Lives, is making its way to Cineworld this September. Directed by playwright-turned-filmmaker Celine Song, the movie, Song's debut feature, was the toast of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, praised for its sensitive emotional acumen and performances. Past Lives centres on two South Korean childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who are separated by circumstance. Many years later, they are reunited as adults in New York and forced to reconcile with what might have been.
Celine Song's gentle meditation on memory, romance and unfulfilled expectations has stunned the critical fraternity. Variety's Peter Debruge writes: "Song, who was born in South Korea, draws on her own history and culture in crafting this truly special feature debut, a treasure that is at once achingly autobiographical and disarmingly universal.
"Her script — so often understated, only to erupt with words when called for — introduces the notion of “In-Yun” to Western viewers, defining it as the universe’s way of reuniting souls who shared a connection in previous lives."
