The Meg, The Transporter, the Fast and Furious films… if a movie has Jason Statham in it, you pretty much know you’re guaranteed a good time at the cinema. How exciting, then, that another Statham blockbuster is pounding and crashing its way into Cineworld this week. Hitting the big screen on 28 March, A Working Man sees the British star reuniting with director David Ayer for a revenge thriller that’s been earning some rave reviews among people who’ve been to see it. But what’s it about and what else do you need to know about it? Read on to find out…
Director David Ayer has made some great action films
The man sitting in the director’s chair for A Working Man, David Ayer, is something of an old hand when it comes to making action movies. He was responsible for such favourites as Brad Pitt war movie Fury (2014), DC Comics blockbuster Suicide Squad (2016) and hard-hitting LA crime drama The Tax Collector (2020). This is actually the second time Ayer has directed Jason Statham – the two having previously worked together on 2024 flick The Beekeeper – and the filmmaker is thrilled with the result. “I’m incredibly proud of this film. It has a lot of heart,” he commented during an exchange with a fan on social media. “Jason really stepped up as a performer. There is the right mix of gravitas and fun. And the action is amazing. I think there is a winning formula. Jason delivers. I really enjoy working with him.”
It has a gritty and nail-biting plot
If you like a good revenge thriller, then you’re sure to love A Working Man. It’s centred around a former Royal Marines commando named Levon Cade (played by Statham), who now works as a construction worker in Chicago. When his boss’s daughter is kidnapped by people traffickers, Cade draws upon his military training to mount a daring rescue mission. As with The Beekeeper, the title of this film plays down what the chief protagonist is capable of – needless to say, Cade’s combat skills are not to be sniffed at!
You can watch it in Cineworld's immersive 4DX format
A Working Man is bursting at the scenes with action set pieces, from raging fist fights to roaring car chases. And what better way to experience these thrilling moments than by watching them in 4DX. This spectacular format uses white-knuckle seat motion, along with a wide range of multi-sensory effects – including wind, water, strobe lighting and authentic smells – to thrust you right into the heart of the action. Immersive and exhilarating, 4DX will take your movie-watching enjoyment to a whole new level.
It was co-written by Sylvester Stallone
Sly Stallone probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves when it comes to movie writing. The Hollywood veteran has penned, or co-penned, six Rocky films, four Rambo films, three Expendables films and a whole bunch of other favourites. Now, he can add the screenplay for A Working Man to his list of achievements.
He, along with director David Ayer, based the script on the 2014 novel Levon’s Trade by Chuck Dixon, and Ayer says he knew right away that theirs was a winning formula. “When the opportunity came up to work with him, when I got this script with his name on it, it just made a lot of sense,” he told Moviefone. “I mean, here's this ’80s action icon, this legend who really understands action. So, the script had a great starting point for me.
"Then, to bring Jason Statham into that, who is really the inheritor of that action tradition from the '80s and '90s. I mean, you just don't have icons like that in the action space like Jason. So, it just felt like a great team up.”
It’s gone down a storm with people who’ve seen it
While critics have yet to comment on A Working Man at the time of going to press, people who've seen preview screenings of the movie have been singing its praises on social media.
One X user wrote: "#AWorkingMan is what we go to the movies for: Gripping, vengeance-fueled beat-downs, a flinty anti-hero @ a lil' sincerity."
Another gushed: "#AWorkingMan is a blast! You know the drill – Jason Statham in a new job, still kicking ass. And it works every time. Beyond the action, it tackles deeper issues like human trafficking and its toll on loved ones. I had a good time with this one – audiences will too!"
And a third film buff said: "A Working Man is easily my favorite Jason Statham-led action film in quite some time."
